An older stone wall restored with traditional lime mortar pointing

Lime mortar pointing in Somerset

Breathable lime mortar pointing for older stone houses, barns, walls and traditional masonry.

Pointing that lets old stone breathe

Many older stone buildings were built with lime mortar. Unlike hard modern cement, lime remains slightly flexible and allows moisture to leave through the joints instead of being trapped in the wall.

We remove failed or unsuitable pointing carefully, prepare the joints and repoint them with a lime mortar chosen to suit the stone and the building. The finish protects the masonry while keeping the character of the original work.

What we point and restore

We start by looking at the stone, the existing joints and the condition of the wall, then agree the mortar and finish before work begins.

Older stone houses

Repointing traditional solid walls with a breathable lime mortar that is compatible with the original construction.

Barns and outbuildings

External and internal stonework repaired and repointed while retaining its agricultural character.

Garden and boundary walls

Weathered joints renewed to protect the wall and bring definition back to the stonework.

Removing unsuitable cement

Hard or failing cement pointing carefully removed where practical and replaced with a more appropriate lime mortar.
